Saturday night, 23 year old Devon Alexander enjoyed a nice little sparring match against Juan Urango. I was not expecting it to be this easy for Alexander. Urango is a tough fighter who previously fought Andre Berto but came up short.
Throughout the eight rounds, I do not think Urango won one round. Alexander controlled the slugger with his jab and quick movement. Urango did land a few good shots but then again not much. Two uppercuts were the magic weapons that improved Devon Alexander to an undefeated 20-0. Not only this, but he unified two junior welterweight belts in the process. If this isn’t an accomplishment, I don’t know what is.
This victory caught the attention of the whole junior welterweight division. Zab Judah seemed to be the most interested in a future match up. However, Alexander’s thoughts are otherwise. Saying Judah is in the past and needs to look ahead for better opponents. Whoever he does fight next, I will be watching.
