ufc 196 review

The highly anticipated UFC 196 did not disappoint last night. This event showcased a double main event; Holly Holm vs Miesha Tate and Conor McGregor vs Nate Diaz. The under card fights were good as well; Ilir Latifi vs Gian Villante, Corey Anderson vs Tom Lawlor and Amanda Nunes vs Valentina Shevchenko.

I picked Holly Holm to defeat Miesha Tate. The fight was panning out this way until Miesha took Holm down for a final time in the fifth round and sung in a rear-naked choke. This was now or never because if Holm got out like previously before, she would have retained her title. Tate was hanging on for dear life as Holly Holm passed out and Miesha Tate becomes the new women’s bantamweight champion. Miesha definitely deserves this, she has worked so hard in her young career. It was hard seeing Holly Holm lose because she is a like-able person. She’ll bounce back and may even get another shot.

Just when you thought the night couldn’t have anymore surprises, in comes the main event. Nick Diaz defeats the popular Conor McGregor by rear-naked choke. This fight was at 170 pounds. McGregor was moving up 20 plus pounds to take on the bigger Diaz. I must say he has some guts doing this. Not many fighters would agree to move up so much weight in so little time. I gave the first round to McGregor as he was the aggressor. Diaz started coming alive in the second trading shots with McGregor. Diaz landed some bombs and shook the younger Irishman. The fight went to the ground and Diaz softened Conor up and sung in the submission for the upset. A great night of fights.
